BAFTSS invites submissions to the Practice Research categories of its 2020 Awards Competition. All entries must constitute a significant, original and rigorous contribution to knowledge.
We invite submissions in the following three categories:
Moving Image (documentary and fiction)
Experimental and Video Essay
Interactive/Installation
Submitted work will also be considered for publication in the BAFTSS Open Screens journal. Applicants should indicate, when submitting work, whether they wish for it to be considered; if so, they will then be contacted following the announcements of the awards.
Individuals or research groups may submit entries to one of the above categories only. Your entry must consist of a practice portfolio, including detailed documentation of the research rationale using the submission proforma below. One output might include several related practice research projects (e.g. a series of short films) or just one (e.g. a database, a film, an app).
Nominees are required to submit a research statement of 500 2000 words as part of this portfolio. The portfolio is intended to enable nominees to point towards the wider research context too. We ask you to define the contribution to knowledge too which can be outside the narrowly defined area of film or digital studies but can include, for example, gender and post colonial studies.
We are inviting work for the period from 1 September 2018 to 31 August 2019. To submit please email your portfolio to James Leggott at HYPERLINK "mailto:james.leggott@northumbria.ac.uk" james.leggott@northumbria.ac.uk by the deadline: 15 November 2019.
BAFTSS Practice Award Portfolio GuidelinesVideos or video documentation of other screen practice must be uploaded on HYPERLINK "http://jmpscreenworks.com/page/www.vimeo.com" Vimeo.com, even if they are available online elsewhere. If you do not already have an account, you will need to join, upload and, if necessary password protect your film using the HYPERLINK "http://vimeo.com/232857" privacy settings. Please see the HYPERLINK "https://vimeo.com/help/compression" Vimeo/Help/Compressionpage for guidance on optimising your video for Vimeo. You will then include the URL (and the password if relevant) on the Submission Form.
Shortlisted work will be considered for inclusion in the Open Screens journal, as an embedded Vimeo file. Please note that, should your work be shortlisted you will need to make it Public in the privacy settings to allow us to embed it into the journal.
If your work is web-based, then simply supply the URL for review purposes. If your work takes any other form (e.g. an app, screen-based art installation or performance) or you have a problem with uploading it on to Vimeo, then pleasecontact us to arrange an alternative review method. Again, where submissions are documentation of interactive or installation work we encourage contributors to consider the problems of documentation as part of the research process.
